O’s Notes: Pianist Martial Solal partners with Franois Moutin (b) and Louis Moutin (d) to form his trio. The Moutin twins are an extension of Solal’s creativity as if the imaginative segments of their brains were connected. The arrangement of “Here’s that rainy day” kept the song disguised for some time before familiarity set in making it much like the originals of the set. At 80 years young, Solal continues to impress with improvisation that is both direct and abstract as on “Short Ends” and highly syncopated on “Navigation”. His music is complex and challenging but not inaccessible. “The Last Time I Saw Paris” is among the best of ten strong songs.
