O’s Notes: Vibraphonist Joe Locke presents a wide variation of styles in this jazz-fusion set. The core of his band is Robert Rodriguez (p), Terreon Gully (d) and Ricardo Rodriguez (b) with a wealth of special guests. Saxophonist Rosario Giuliani adds melodies across the syncopated rhythm section. The highlight of the set is a 5-piece suite based on a poem by Barbara Sfraga. It includes “Love Is A Planchette” that resonates with the sounds of a church and gives us a taste of free jazz on “Love Is A Perpetual Motion”. We also enjoyed the mellow reconciliation “For Jesse Mountain” and the racy “Last Ditch Wisdom”. Love Is A Pendulum is indeed a roller coaster and worth the ride.
