O’s Notes: The Westchester Jazz Orchestra (WJO) is directed and conducted by Mike Holober who also produced this CD. They band is accomplished and includes bassist Harvey S, Ted Rosenthal (p), Marvin Stamm (t), Ralph Lalama (ts) and Jason Rigby (ts). As the title suggests, the program is a take on Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage album. The arrangements are fresh and not congested with the abundance of musicians. Instead, there is power and warmth supporting the soloists. No need for a blow-by-blow here. The music is great and the performance by WJO is spot on!
