O’s Notes: Trumpeter Jonathan Powell leads a contemporary Latin band with a wealth of talent on Mambo Jazz Party. The pace varies with warm ballads and explosive, high energy, burners. Vocalist Ariacne Trujilo softens “You’re Everything” followed by a warm arrangement of “Butterfly” featuring Manuel Valera (keyboards). Percussionist Luisito Quintero and conguero Marcos Torres shine on “Paramahansa”. We also enjoyed “Frogwala”, “Un Dia Bonito II” with Anthony Almonte on the mic, and the relaxing “Alone, Alone and Alone” featuring the leader on trumpet.
