O’s Notes: Composer and pianist Marshall Vente delves into the heart of Latin jazz on this album. His band, Tropicale includes Luiz Ewerling (d), Glenn Reitsma (g) Jim Batson (b), Scott Mason (b) and Jose Gregorio (percussion). The focus is Cuban music and Brazilian rhythms, specifically many Jobim tunes along with a couple of originals. Marshall’s phrasing makes this more than just another Latin CD. He also infuses guest artists such as April Aloisio singing on “Insensatez”, Anna Dawson singing “Triste” and Kristi McGonagle singing “Agua de Beber”. Vente himself shines on piano especially on “Brazilian Folk Song” making this what we’ve come to expect from him, another very good session.
