O’s Notes: Pianist Orrin Evans teams with Gene Jackson (d) and Eric Revis (b) to form a solid rhythm section while Sam Newsome (sax) and Ralph Bowen (sax, cl) split duty for melodies. There are eight new neobop/fusion compositions written by Evans with dark tonal character. Orrin’s work on piano is generally subtle but he sneaks in some sweet exchanges throughout the set. Balanced, original and inspirational, Meant to Shine is worth a listen.
