O’s Notes: Northwest + 1 was formed after a routine guest invitational at Spokane Falls Community College in Washington in June 2013. The host was trumpeter Kevin Woods. The rest of the quintet are Damani Phillips (sax), Danny McCollum (p), John Hamar (b) and Julian MacDonnough (d). The chemistry at that performance was so strong they decided to convene to record some of their tunes around a cover of “Lisa”. Most of the songs are straight-ahead bebop with some funky juice added to spice up the mix. “Sunset’s Last Embrace”, “Blues For Mingus” and “Flotsam and Jetsam” are highlights. Strangers at SFCC in 2013, now a promising quintet!
