O’s Notes: Headliners Matta (b) and Ben-Hur (g) lead a quartet with Victor Lewis (d) and Café (perc). They perform a dozen mostly Latin classics. They merge Brazilian samba and New York modern bebop over a dozen selections. The songs range from the light spirited “Laventos” to instrumental ballads like “Rosa”. But there are highlights aplenty: “Baden”, “Canal Street” with a strong solo by Lewis and many more. Roni does an excellent job leading the melodies throughout the session complemented by several excellent solos from Matta.
