O’s Notes: This is a great sampling of blue ballads from Concord’s vast library. The focus is on the melancholy blue moods. Ten selections both instrumental and vocal give everyone something to enjoy. Our favorites are “Black Coffee” sung by Mary Stallings complemented by Harry “Sweets” Edison (t); Nnenna Freelon singing “If I Had You”; “My Funny Valentine”, a duet combining Red Holloway (sax) and Jack McDuff (organ); and Carmen McRae’s “Fine and Mellow” with a wealth of integrated instrumental solos. There are over 20 titles in Concord’s Jazz Moods series. Select the appropriate one for your vibe and let music embellish it. Mood Indigo is a winner.
