O’s Notes: Maria sings New Orleans style blues. Her voice is raspy and her style mimics Bessie Smith on songs like “Handy Man”. That’s no surprise as Bessie influenced Muldaur. And this is a collection of blues tunes sung by legendary women blues singers in front of jug bands. There are a dozen tracks; songs of Ma Rainey, Victoria Spivey, Sippie Wallace, Mamie Smith, Ethyl Waters, Alberta Hunter, Sara Martin and of course Bessie Smith. Muldaur does a great job here and partners with Bonnie Raitt on “Separation Blues” to cap the set.
