O’s Notes: Trumpeter Michael Sarian embarks on a fresh approach with New Aurora. This take is more modern jazz vs. the contemporary bent of past works. The program is mostly original compositions performed in a quartet with Santiago Leibson (p), Dayeon Seok (d) and either Marty Kenney or Matt Pavolka on bass. There are a wide range of tempos ranging from warm ballads like “Colorado Yeta” and “Scottie” to the spirited “Primo” featuring Leibson. There’s also a cool cover of “Ask Me Now”.
