O’s Notes: Nice Folks is collaboration between percussionist Famoudou Don Moye (from the Art Ensemble of Chicago) and composer Paul Elwood (banjo, vocals). They mix jazz, bluegrass and Appalachian folk music with group improvisations. The Invisible Ensemble is led by Elwood with Moye, Kelsey Shiba (vocals), Pierre Fenichel (b), Raphael Imbert (sax, cl), Jean-Marc Montera (g), Thomas Weirich (g, music boxes), Simon Sieger (keys, tb) and The GRIM/Montevideo Choir. The songs have a free contemporary jazz flair, with good stories and harmonized twangy vocals. It’s not our usual jazz stick but provides good entertainment highlighted by songs like “Blue Flame” and “Sally Ann”.
