O’s Notes: This is collaboration between violinist David MacKenzie and pianist Josh Johnston. They get support from Stephen McFarlane (g), Andrew Csibi (b) and Robbie Harris (perc). We enjoyed “Silk”, a rich ballad that had blues, swing and classic jazz elements all intertwined. McFarland shares the melody on several tracks but MacKenzie generally takes the spotlight. Among the best are “Broadband Blues” and the relaxing “Wistful Thinking”. These songs draw you into the moods of the moment ranging from dark to jovial. The duo has a lot to say and present it well in the atypical group.
