O’s Notes: Chris loves singing and you can see his satisfaction in his voice. He has hints of Michael Franks and touches of Kurt Elling in his signature. The program is a collection of pop songs and jazz classics. They are transformed into new pieces with instrumental solos, scatting and groove. Humphrey sings all of the tunes within his range that by itself changes the complexion from the originals. His band, Matt Wilson (d), Martin Wind (b) and Mark Shilansky (p) is excellent. We liked the swing of “Anna’s Song” that flowed right into the scatting blues of “Swingin’ Til The Girls Come Home”. They also do an incredible job on “Lullaby For Jackson”. While this is Humphrey’s first release as a leader, it is clear that he can stand amongst the best in the business while remaining in his zone. That’s what makes this release so good!
