O’s Notes: Andrew Rathbun plays reeds and leads a quintet with pianist Phil Markowitz, Taylor Haskins (t), Jay Anderson (b) and Bill Stewart (d). They play eleven selections composed by Rathbun and infused with high energy and passion. Andrew coaxes the most from his team and dances on the edge to go beyond a standard set of blues variations. The pace is relaxed on “Crawl Out” with Markowitz asserting himself. Rathbun is in charge and weaves his sax into the mix as on “Tears And Fears”. Audio quality is excellent expanding the reach of this modern free jazz set.
