O’s Notes: This is a formidable quartet with Chris Potter (sax), Larry Grenadier (b), Rebecca Martin (vocals), Masabumi Kikuchi (p) and leader Paul Motian (d). The basic trio is playing free jazz while the addition of Martin takes them closer to mainstream. The vocal jazz ballads are very good. And there are several songs that traverse the contemporary/traditional boundaries. We liked what we heard overall, especially “Last Night When You Were Young” and their arrangement of “How Long Has This Been Going On”. As always with Paul, this session is different. But this time he expands his audience. It’s a refreshing and welcome change.
