O’s Notes: Drummer Paul Motian, Thomas Morgan (b) and Loren Stilman (sax) are Trio 2000. Paul invites Michal Attias (sax) and Masabumi Kikuchi (p) to join them for On Broadway, the fifth volume in an ongoing series. “Something I Dreamed Last Night” warmed our spirits with excellent sax work from to duo. That continued with an adventurous melody on “Just A Gigolo” with Kikuchi holding the tune together. Most of the session is slow ballads that allow to listener to fully immerse. Kikuchi’s grunting in the background during some of the tunes is something that we could have done without, a bit of a distraction to say the least in an otherwise good set.
