O’s Notes: We rarely get a taste of Russian jazz but are impressed by Moscow-based drummer and bandleader Sasha Mashin’s latest release,“Outsidethebox. He assembles a talented team including guests Alex Sipiagin (t) and Rosario Giuliani (alto sax) on the first 4 selections, and Zhenya Strigalev (alto sax) over the last 5 tracks. Hiske Oosterwijk adds high-octane vocals on a few songs notably “Jazzmashin”. The groove is heavily syncopated, complex and layered but never congested, a truly a worthwhile experience!
