O’s Notes: Saxophonist Jeff Benedict and guitarist Dave Askren lead a quartet with bassist Jonathan Pintoff and drummer Chris Garcia. They perform the music of Wayne Shorter on Paraphernalia, their latest release. It’s a celebration of the 1960’s jazz-rock style that contained a wealth of sophisticated jazzy improvisation and expanded the reach towards more mainstream contemporary genres. “Iris” and “Fall” are two of the ballads, the latter with a Latin bent. Shorter’s music remains relevant especially tunes like “Yes And/Or No”, “Mahjong” and the title track.
