O’s Notes: Soprano saxophonist Will Vinson leads a band that includes guitarist Mike Moreno, drummer Jeff Ballard, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and bassist Matt Penman. This is the tried and true quintet that has performed on many of Will’s prior releases. They perform new material utilizing synthesizers and overdubs, a first for Vinson that is Perfectly Out of Place. The resulting complexity adds more depth that is not always a good thing but thankfully there is more good than bad here. Things works well on “Stiltskin” a funky number, “The Clock Killer” and the well balanced “Upside”. There are also generous amounts of soothing ballads notably “Willoughby General”. Vinson does a good job along with his band especially Moreno who imparts a definitive rock fusion feel on “Chalk It Up”.
