O’s Notes: We’ve been fans of jazz pianist Lyle Mays for many years and we’re thrilled to receive this new release The Ludwigsburg Concert, a part of the Piano Heroes series. Mays is perhaps more widely known for his work with Pat Metheny but he released several albums as a leader. This effort is in a quartet with bassist Marc Johnson, Bob Sheppard on sax and drummer Mark Walker. It was a live recording at Scala in Ludwigsburg, Germany on November 14, 1993. The engineers captured all of the nuances. The solos are well executed, extended and allow each musician to display their prowess. It is a 2-disc set and a worthy addition to any jazz-fusion lover’s collection.
