O’s Notes: Pieces of Jade gives us a slice of the life of bassist Scott LaFaro. He plays in a trio with Don Friedman (p) and Pete LaRoca (d) for most of the CD. “Woody’ n You” features Scott and Pete in a tremendous exchange that goes on appreciably with Friedman inserting runs. It is one of three classic selections, the best of which is “Green Dolphin St.” There are also two takes of Friedman’s “Sacre Bléu” and a rehearsal tape with Bill Evans. An insightful interview of Evans discussing LaFaro by George Klabin is a rare bonus and a treasure on the CD. Friedman’s work is strong culminating with the finale “Memories for Scotty”, a solo ballad.
