O’s Notes: This was the third in a series of five Plays for Lovers releases from Prestige in the mid-1960’s. Coltrane’s compilation of the finest ballads comes from his 1957 – 1958 recordings generally featuring Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass as the core of 4-5 piece bands. John’s mellow side is ultra sweet on tenor sax. Highlights are “Stardust”, “Lush Life” and “Invitation” but any and all of these nine songs will set the mood right.
