O’s Notes: Saxophonist Peter Epstein was once a steady fixture on the progressive New York jazz scene before taking a position as the director of jazz studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. He formed a new quartet for Polarities with Ralph Alessi (t, cornet), Sam Minaie (b) and mark Ferber (d). Epstein wrote all nine compositions, a collection dedicated to the magnetic and gravitational forces that keep bodies close or far apart. The songs include ballads, free jazz and fusion. The variety allows each of the musician’s space to explore and they rise to the occasion to display their talents. Epstein has not lost a beat since migrating out west and he has a wealth of creativity.
