O’s Notes: He’s billed as the world’s greatest bass player. He was certainly one of the most creative and remains among the most emulated even today. Jaco exploded on his bass playing melodies as well as anchoring the groove. As a composer he also shined. This 2-Disc portrait is a biographical sketch of his musical career that gives an excellent perspective of the man and his music during 1968 – 1978. Each of the songs is intertwined with commentary from many of the people exposed to him. The liner notes are also extensive and revealing. His pioneering use of harmonics and the fretless electric bass both established new ways for the bass to be used. This is informative, good listening and a strong addition to any jazz collection.
