O’s Notes: John Beasley arranges, composes, plays piano and assembles a strong group to make powerful statement on Positootly! Jeff “Tain” Watts (d) Bennie Maupin (sax), Brian Lynch (t), Munyungo Jackson (perc) and James Genus (b) are all first call musicians with a lot to say. The definition of the title is ‘absolutely positive’, a direction we all want to go in the face of a crushed economy with pain coming from seemingly every direction. The music reflects this with an intertwining program that allows everyone to unleash! There are seven originals and three covers that are artfully tailored to fit into the grand scheme, especially “Tanguedia III”. Our favorites are “Black Thunder” and the mellow “Elle”. Beasley has a winner that helps us forget our issues for a while and hopefully moves us towards recovery.
