O’s Notes: Tom’s warm tones and crisp clean attack are the envy of many trumpet players. He leads a quintet with the same musicians from his last recording, Light On: Jonathan Blake (d) Wayne Escoffery (sax), Ugonna Okegwo (b) and Danny Grissett (p). The program has eight new originals that could be classified as neobop or cool fusion. The interaction between the musicians on “Prana” is harmonious with all soft tones from the brass and Fender Rhodes. The pace is racy but the output is soothing. We liked the energy on “The Call” and “Marching” giving this set sizzle as well. It is a disc you will want to listen to more than once!
