O’s Notes: This dedication is to the late Sam Furnace, a masterful free jazz sax player. Cole was fascinated by his style and invited Furnace to play with Bill in his Untempered Ensemble. This program includes three selections recorded at the Vision Festival in New York during June 2001 and one selection from a live session in Burlington, VT during March 2001. Cole plays a variety of Eastern instruments including the Chinese Sona and Indian Shenai. They give his music an Eastern flavor. The music is seemingly going in many directions at the same time and each of the musicians is free to express Cole’s compositions with their own interpretation. This is way out and not for those who desire structure. It’s a fitting dedication to Furnace including some of his own great movements.
