O’s Notes: Pianist Mike Holober takes on the challenge of arranging, composing and leading a 17- piece jazz ensemble based in New York. He is not only successful but uses his genius to harness the power of his big band into soft, warm and romantic passages on “Roc & a Soft Place”. The musicians blend tones vs. blaring. You can feel the funk on “Twist & Turn” or try to stay with them as they dash through “Ruby Tuesday”. Holober manages to extract the beauty of all of the colors in his musical pallet and keep it all within our grasp. This is a work of art.
