O’s Notes: Bassist Rufus Reid usually plays in a small ensemble but for Quiet Pride he enlists 20 musicians including Steve Allee (p), Ingrid Jenson (t), Steve Wilson (sax) and Michael Dease (tb). The suite contains five movements dedicated to Elizabeth Catlett, an African American artist who has created many fascinating sculptures that celebrate the heroic strength and endurance of minority women. Charenee Wade adds rich vocals to a rich, dynamic performance that is up to the standards of Catlett’s work. This is among Reid’s best recordings!
