O’s Notes: Jazz vibraphonist, composer Jay Hoggard, draws on Afro-bop, spiritual and R&B roots for Raise Your Spirit Consciousness, a delightful set. Eight of the twelve songs are originals. The band includes Dwight Andrews (s-sax, b-cl), Pheeroan Aklaff (d), James Weidman (keyboards), Nat Adderley, Jr., (p); and Kenny Davis (b). There’s a good R&B rhythm underlying some reggae beats in this set relaxing songs that make you feel good. Highlights are “In The Beginning: Praise God”, “Holy Spirit Consciousness”, “Bird of Beauty” and “Toe Dance For Baby”.They end with a journey into free jazz on “Premordial Aqua Mist”.
