O’s Notes: Rambling Boy is a collection of 19 country & western classics. We thought we had the wrong disc by accident when we first played it. It’s not the typical jazz we are accustomed to hearing from jazz bassist Charlie Haden. So we checked the liner notes and yes, this is a brief departure for Charlie as he revisits his childhood roots! But after the initial shock, we found the music and lyrics to be quite satisfying for fans of this genre. It is not the first time Haden has ventured off of the jazz path with two folksy albums released in 1995 & 1997. Joining him on this effort are his wife, Ruth and his children and several other guest stars including Elvis Costello, Pat Metheny and Bela Fleck. You can feel the love and joy in this family dedication.
