O’s Notes: Random Dances and (A)Tonalities“is a series of soft, sometimes melancholy ballads featuring clarinetist and soprano saxophonist Don Byron with pianist Aruán Ortiz. The pair feed off of each other and shine on Ellington’s “Black and Tan Fantasy”. They play ten songs including three by Ortiz, two by Byron and a collaboration between the duo: “Impressions on a Golden Theme”. They use space and air to allow the timber of their instruments to blossom while sounding much larger than a duo.
