O’s Notes: Receptive is the third release for drummer, composer and bandleader Sofia Goodman. She leads an octet for this outing. Goodman’s compositions allow her musicians to stand out! They immediately capture our attention opening with “Trust” featuring Blaise Hearn (t). Jovan Quallo (fl) follows on “Allow”, Desmond Ng (tb) on “Channel”, Leland Nelson (b) on “Presence”, Dan Hitchcock (t-sax) on “Gratitude”, before the swinging title track showcases Alex Murphy (p). Listening more carefully we hear Sofia providing the glue and all the right accents along with percussionist Jimmy Lopez in a well-balanced performance.
