O’s Notes: The Komeda Project is a dedication to the music of Polish pianist, composer Krzysztof Komeda, considered by many as the father of modern jazz in Europe. He worked under Communist rule in Poland and the oppression is clearly a part of his musical expression. Russ Johnson (t), Scott Colley (b), Krzysztof Medyna (sax), Andrzej Winnicki (p) and Nasheet Waits (d) are the musicians who tackle Komeda’s work and they do a good job with it. Two originals by Winnicki fit in nicely to the set of ten selections. Jazz was an important outlet for Komeda and it there are volumes of thoughts hidden in its expression.
