Shelan, 2002, CD
Instrument: Female Vocals
Jazz Ruler Type: Ballads, Blues
O’s Notes: Sheila is back with longtime guitarist/producer Rick Matle on Riding the Round Pool. The 12 tracks are mostly Landis/Matle originals, an extension of poetry and spoken word into jazz. There’s a spicy bossa nova feel on “Garota de Ipanema” and a spacey, open feel on “New Millennium” that typifies the character of this set. We must mention “First Lady” and “My Baby Just Cares for Me” as standouts featuring guest artists Randy Johnson (g) and Dwight Adams (t). Whether she’s scatting or harmonizing on ballads, Sheila injects the right stuff into the mix while Matle leads the rest of the band with precision.
