O’s Notes: Steve Washington is the singer, a crooner with a powerful yet passionate voice. He sings in front of the Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra, a polished large ensemble that delivers unique arrangements of jazz standards. Thad plays trumpet, arranged and conducted 5 of the 9 selections. Washington breathes delicate romance into “Corcavado” and the band is equally up to the task on songs like “The Lamp Is Low” featuring a solo by Brian Settles on tenor sax. The mood is bright and bouncy on “Alright, Okay, and You Win” and vibrant on “Caravan ” in contrast with warm ballads that dominate the set. Steve does a fine job here with a performance that will thrill a large audience.
