O’s Notes: Daniel Garbin plays guitar, sitar, produced, and composed the music on Rising, his debut. Garbin was born in Romania and fascinated by the connection between music and mathematics. The self-taught guitarist is also a math professor who made his way to New York being influenced by many genres. The opening title track is a combination of classic Indian music with contemporary jazz. There’s a taste of Latin on “Simi’s Bossa”, excellent piano work by Camila Cortina Bello on “Rolling Hills”, and a strong bass solo by Eddy Khaimovich on “Anomisericordo”. We also liked the groove on “Almost Forgotten -Like Satch”, and Garbin’s fretwork on “Dsd” featuring solos from saxophonist Scott Litroff & the rest of the band, anchored by Brian Woodruff on drums.
