O’s Notes: Puerto Rican drummer Henry Cole is based in New York and seems to absorb all of the city’s urban music. Roots Before Branches has a wide range of Afro-beats starting with fusion on “Aurea V” then right into a fierce funky beat with rap on “Trabájala” including alto sax from guest Miguel Zenón. The songs are mostly instrumentals with prominent percussion. There are threads of jazz, pop and hip-hop, all with a Latin twist. We loved the funky “No eras tu, say yo” with David Sanchez on tenor sax. Overall, it felt pretty good with many enjoyable infectious tunes.
