O’s Notes: One of the pioneering contemporary R&B groups returns after a 20 year hiatus. Original members Joe Sample (p), Stix Hooper (d) and Wilton Felder (sax) are joined by polished pros like Eric Clapton (g) and Freddie Washington (b). Sounds of Blackness and Donnie McClurkin raise the roof with strong gospel vocals for “A Healing Coming On”. This is a well-balanced set with their famous Texas groove surfacing on “The Territory”, “Lazy Sundays” and the title track. They’re back!
