O’s Notes: Veteran Brazilian drummer, Da Fonseca moved to New York in 1975. In the course of rekindling the samba/jazz scene in America, he made many friends. Many of those musicians join him for his first solo album, Samba Jazz Fantasia. He lets their expression blossom and the result is a masterpiece! There are Brazilian classics like “Partido Out”, “Fotographia” and “Bala com Bala” along with “Terrestris” featuring nice work from Tom Harrell and Joe Lovano followed by John Scofield’s “Sco’s Bossa” with a taste of fusion. Deduka anchors it all showing his chops on “Dona Maria” and “Manhattan Style” two of his own compositions.
