O’s Notes: The title is a good descriptor of the musicians on this recording. Vincent Herring (sax), Jeremy Pelt (t), Peter Washington (b), Al Foster (d) and leader Walton (p) are all first-call, polished jazz artists. The program is a combination of five originals with three complimentary covers. At 74 years old, Walton continues to be as steady as a rock. They swing on “Longevity” and the Cedar takes the spotlight for “When Love Is New”, a beautiful ballad. He remains the center of attention through most of the set shining with soothing melodies on “A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square”. The horns perk up for “Plexus” and “John’s Blues”, two upbeat numbers that left us wishing for an encore!
