O’s Notes: Secret Treetop“is spontaneous jazz-fusion featuring Chinese composer and vocalist Annie Chen. She leads a New York based octet with Rafal Sarnecki (g), Tomoko Omura (violin), David Smith (t), Glenn Zaleski (p), Alex LoRe (sax, fl), Mat Muntz (b), and Jerad Lippi (d). This is Chen’s sophomore recording and it resonated with us. Annie carves her signature using distinct Asian-fusion, syncopated rhythms with melodic voicing on top. “So Bao Xiang Hui” and the title track are excellent examples tempered by mid-tempo compositions like “My Ocean is Blue in White”.
