O’s Notes: Sedimental You“is seven tunes for seven musicians composed by leader, bassist Mark Dresser. Nicole Mitchell (fl), Marty Ehrlich (cl), David Morales Boroff (violin), Michael Dessen (tb), Joshua White (p) and Jim Black (d, perc) are the rest of the band, all accomplished musicians. Three of the songs are dedications, the best of which is “I Can Smell You Listening” for the late vocalist Alexandra Montano. Those are the more orderly tunes in a very eclectic set. Dresser’s approach is somewhat disruptive as he encourages the musicians to explore their passions outside of the lines. The results are not overly chaotic but definitely off of the beaten path. Somehow, it comes together nicely on tunes like the title track.“
