O’s Notes: Starting with the band; Richard Wyands (p), Russell Malone (g), Peter Washington (b), Grady Tate (d) and headliner, Houston Person on sax, you know the ingredients are right! The title suggests warm ballads and that’s a strong indication of what’s coming. The songs are infused with inspirational solos that stay true to the melody while taking on a sense of adventure simultaneously. These are humable tunes and Houston’s voicings will help you sing the words and feel the mood. Songs like “Fools Rush In”, “Black Velvet” and “A Sunday Kind of Love” will mesmerize and suggest a slow dance. This is the latest of Person’s jazz standards CDs on High Note and it’s yet another strong effort.
