O’s Notes: Shades of Gray is a collection of different pairings featuring Bob Gray playing clarinet and saxophone. The first fifteen selections are clarinet duets with Bill Cunliffe (p), Judith Farmer (bassoon), Joane Pearce Martin (p), Adam Korniszewski (violin), Gary Foster (sax) and Kenny Burrell (g). Gray switches to sax for last two songs: Jobim’s “Wave” and “Lush Life” featuring spoken word by Juliette Gray. There are some fleeting passages that reminded us of cartoon music (Bugs Bunny) and many soothing selections. The variety of approaches helped us appreciate a full album of clarinet and expands its appeal to a wider audience.
