O’s Notes: Horace, a pianist and a genius of sorts as a composer, musician and leader, mostly writes the music. Whether he’s playing his own tunes or standards, they sound great in his hands. This is a 1956 session that features Horace along with a young Donald Byrd (t), Joe Gordon (t), Hank Mobley (sax), Doug Watkins (b), Kenny Clarke (d) and Art Taylor (d). Astute observers will notice that these are all descendents of the Jazz Messengers. It’s a quintet that cooks up a good meal for the ears. Enjoy it!
