O’s Notes: Sketches is the latest compilation from veteran pianist Amina Figarova. She seems to get better with time continuously integrating the experiences from her global tours into her compositions. Her band includes Ernie Hammes (t), Marc Mommaas (sax), Bart Platteau (fl), Jeroen Vierdag (b) and Chris “Buckshot” Strik (d). The set opens with Amina dancing across the keys on “Four Steps to…” She combines her classical roots with soft bop is a way that makes the music sing. Figarova touches free space on “Unacceptable” without venturing too far off the path. Mommaas takes us on a ride on “WHOTSOT”, a tune with a lot of pop and sizzle. It is Hammes turn on “Flight No”, a swift bebop tune. There are 13 original compositions and were enjoyed them all.
