O’s Notes: Back in 1993 the late drummer Billy Higgins joined forces with the young lion (at the time) Dawan Muhammad (sax, fl). Their sextet includes James Smith (t), Phil Ranelin (tb), Greg Kristin (p) and Jesse Murphy (b). The original release was titled The Hood dedicated to Art Blakey, the first for LifeForce Jazz Records. The rerelease is called Smoke Signal and includes Higgins in the dedication. Muhammad penned three of the selections, collaborated with Murphy on another and added three classic covers. While this is a studio recording most of the tunes were captured in one take and the spontaneity equals that of a live performance that sounds fresh in all aspects in 2015!
