O’s Notes: Michael Cain plays keyboards and leads the band for Sola, his latest release. He composed, mixed and produced the entire effort as well. There are two ensembles: The New York Band, a trio with Billy Hart (d) and James Genus (b) and The Vegas Band, a sextet with Renaldo Elliot (d), Abo Gumroyan (b), Michael Gonzales (t), Julian Tanaka (cl) and Eddie Rich (sax). “In the Front Door” starts with an urban beat and includes spoken word from Gerald Wilson followed by the mellow soul vibe of “Mais Uma Noite” and “My Moyo”. That contrasts with the electronic tribal fusion of “Wogg”. The overall impact is good on this contemporary set that touches several genres.
